5×5 vs 5×10. The motorcycle decides.

The two smallest self-storage sizes share a footprint width (5 ft) but differ in depth (5 ft vs 10 ft). The cubic capacity doubles (200 cu ft to 400 cu ft) and the use-case mix changes meaningfully. Most buyers think they want 5×5 and end up needing 5×10 within 30 days — the floor cost of upsizing mid-rental at most operators is one month's pro-rated rent plus admin fee.

The motorcycle test

Both sizes are 5 ft wide. The only variable is depth, 5 ft against 10 ft. A road motorcycle is roughly 7 ft to 7 ft 6 in from wheel to wheel and under 3 ft across the bars, so it clears 10 ft of depth easily and cannot be made to sit inside 5 ft at any angle. Wheeling it in diagonally does not help, because the diagonal of a 5 ft by 5 ft floor is only 7 ft 1 in and the door is on one of those walls.

That makes it the cleanest single test. If your load includes a motorcycle, a scooter, a mid-sized bedroom or the contents of a studio, you need 5×10. If it is boxes, seasonal items, a twin mattress and small chairs, 5×5 covers it.

The cost of getting it wrong

We do not publish rate tables for either size, because no free public source supports one. What we can say is structural: a 5×10 is never priced at double a 5×5 at the same site, despite holding double the volume, because the fixed costs of a unit do not scale with its floor. If your inventory is close to the line, the larger unit is usually the better value per cubic foot. Ask the site for both rates in the same call and do that comparison yourself.

The trap is renting a 5×5 and needing a 5×10 a month later. You pay the move-in charges twice and you move everything between units by hand. Ask about the transfer charge before you sign, because it varies by operator and it is the number that decides whether guessing small is cheap.

What 5×10 will not fit, whatever the listing suggests

Blog copy sometimes suggests a 5×10 takes a small car such as a Smart Fortwo or a Mazda MX-5. It does not. The shortest cars on sale are around 8 ft 10 in long and 5 ft 1 in wide before mirrors, and the roller door on a nominally 5 ft wide unit is narrower than the unit itself. The car cannot be driven or pushed through the opening. Vehicle storage starts at 10×15 and is normally 10×20.

Practical recommendation:If you're storing more than boxes + seasonal items + a twin mattress, get 5×10. The size headroom prevents the mid-rental upsize trap and the $/cu-ft math favours the larger unit. If you're storing a motorcycle or studio-apartment contents, 5×10 is the correct minimum. For cars, skip both sizes and go 10×15.
