5×5 vs 5×10. The motorcycle decides.

The two smallest self-storage sizes share a footprint width (5 ft) but differ in depth (5 ft vs 10 ft). The cubic capacity doubles (200 cu ft to 400 cu ft) and the use-case mix changes meaningfully. Most buyers think they want 5×5 and end up needing 5×10 within 30 days — the floor cost of upsizing mid-rental at most operators is one month's pro-rated rent plus admin fee.

The motorcycle test

Public Storage's size guides for 5×5 and 5×10 both speak directly to motorcycle storage. The 5×5 guide explicitly says: “most motorcycles will not fit in our 5×5 self storage units”. The 5×10 guide says: “5×10 is large enough for most motorcycles, with extra space for a couple accessories.”

This is the cleanest test for size choice: if your inventory includes a motorcycle, scooter, mid-sized bedroom contents, or studio apartment, you need 5×10. If it's small overflow (boxes, seasonal items, twin mattress, small chairs), 5×5 is sufficient.

The price math

Nationally, 5×10 rolling rates run ~1.6x the 5×5 rate at the same facility. National median 5×5 = $45/mo; 5×10 = $72/mo. The 5×10 premium of $27/mo is below the cubic-foot premium (5×10 has 2x the capacity but only 1.6x the price) — meaning 5×10 is the better $/cu-ft value if you have the inventory to justify it.

The trap: renting 5×5 and immediately needing 5×10 means paying full move-in admin fees twice plus moving everything between units. Operators charge $25-$50 for unit transfer; the practical cost of getting the size wrong is $50-$150 plus an afternoon of work.

What 5×10 will NOT fit (regardless of marketing claims)

Some marketing-side blog claims suggest 5×10 fits a small car (Smart car, Mazda Miata). Operator size guides actively contradict this. Public Storage and Extra Space both state 5×10 is not viable for vehicles. For car storage, the size jumps to 10×15 or 10×20 (which fit a standard car comfortably).

Practical recommendation:If you're storing more than boxes + seasonal items + a twin mattress, get 5×10. The size headroom prevents the mid-rental upsize trap and the $/cu-ft math favours the larger unit. If you're storing a motorcycle or studio-apartment contents, 5×10 is the correct minimum. For cars, skip both sizes and go 10×15.
